PREVIEW
The next-generation Audi A3 destined for American shores won't be the four-door hatchback that we've come to know, but a small sedan instead. It's an unconventional move from Audi, yet the automaker clearly hopes to win hearts, minds and dollars by positioning the Audi A3 as a premium compact four-door. The 2015 Audi S3 is a step above the A3 in terms of performance and features.
The S3 will be based on a new lightweight platform designed for front- and all-wheel-drive applications. This same platform will also underpin the next Golf and several future VW products. Compared to the current A3, the new S3 is slightly longer for improved proportions and interior space.
INTERIOR
The 2015 Audi S3 will benefit from the A3's push upmarket, with improved interior quality, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, Bluetooth, an MMI navigation system, a WiFi hotspot connection, a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, even a cell phone booster antenna. Audi's pre-sense safety system, which preloads the brakes and seatbelts when it senses an impending collision, comes standard. Blind-spot warning and adaptive cruise control are also expected features, whether standard or as options.
UNDER THE HOOD
The S3 will use an uprated version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder found in the top A3 trim level. Audi hasn't released power specs for that engine, but the S3's figure is expected to be around 300 horsepower. A six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission will distribute power to all four wheels. A four-mode drive select system will allow drivers to choose one of four modes that adjust throttle response, steering effort and shift points.
The 2015 Audi S3 is likely to hit dealer showrooms next summer, a few months after the A3 rolls out onto America's streets. Expect the sticker to climb to about $50,000 for a well-equipped S3.
