For 2015, the Ford Edge receives the first significant redesign in its short history. Ford has overhauled the Fusion with improved style, handling and technology, traits that will likely permeate the newest version of the Edge.
The recent Edge Concept shows that the midsize crossover won't lack style. Even dismissing the concept's whimsical details, the production model should present a stronger, squarer jaw. The hexagonal grille and body-colored bumper replace the "chrome waterfall" front-end look of the current model. Behind the grille, active shutters open and close for improved airflow and fuel efficiency, aided by new aero vents in the lower front fascia.
The 285-horsepower V6 engine standard in the current Edge should carry over, as will a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive will be available. A 2.0-liter "EcoBoost" four-cylinder engine should remain an option; it delivers 240 hp and 24 mpg combined in the current model. A 2.3-liter four-cylinder rated at 270 hp is another interesting possibility. This engine will end up in the forthcoming redesigned Mustang and in the Edge's premium counterpart, the Lincoln MKC crossover.
The Edge already features a minimalist-cool interior, but upgrades will likely include improved leather seating and a 10-inch touchscreen display to control multimedia functions. Buttons and switches have returned to recent Ford and Lincoln models, bypassing reliance on the touchscreen. We expect this welcome trend to continue in the new 2015 Ford Edge.
The Edge concept model showcased safety and convenience advances that could show up in the production model in some form. A parking assist system takes over steering duties, requiring the driver to apply only throttle and brakes. An obstacle avoidance system, meanwhile, uses radar, sensors and a camera to scan the road more than 200 yards ahead. If necessary, the system can brake and steer to avoid an object.
Other technologies will be familiar: adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, collision mitigation and lane keeping assist.
The 2015 Ford Edge should go on sale this fall, starting not much higher than the current $28,995 base price. That price should keep it competitive in a group that includes the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg, Nissan Murano and even the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
